Kenya's VASP Act in force: existing operators have until 4 November 2026

4 November 2025  ·  More from November 2025

Kenya's Virtual Asset Service Providers Act 2025, assented 15 October 2025 and in force from 4 November 2025, made Kenya the first East African country with standalone virtual asset legislation. Supervision splits between the CBK (issuance and custodial services) and the CMA (exchanges, brokers, trading platforms), the 3% digital asset tax was repealed in favour of excise duty on VASP service fees under the Finance Act 2025, and section 47 gives existing VASPs one year to comply: the deadline is 4 November 2026.

UpdateDraft implementing regulations were published for consultation on 17 March 2026 and the consultation closed 11 April 2026; the CBK began hiring virtual asset supervisors in late April (see related entries).
